Instead of a black satchel filled with stethoscope and medications, a Fort Lauderdale computer repair "doctor" or expert may use an online portal that features PC health-check tools and an easy way for technicians to buy, download and install products onto customers' machines.

This has led to many burgeoning sub-businesses.

One service portal, called OnSitePC, launched last year. It is designed solely for technicians doing on-site setup and computer repair, giving them an incentive to buy CA, and other, software through the site's creator.

"The whole idea with computer repair on-site, and making the sale to the customer, is having the software or hardware at the time (it's needed)," says a V.P. at the firm. "You never want to go back to get supplies with the machine not fixed."

A survey of Ft. Lauderdale computer repair technicians shows that the basic price for a house call for a virus issue is $135-200, which includes the cost of the software to solve the problem.

It's routine for software makers to give incentives to specialists who pick their products to install on customers' machines, but the deciding factor remains the network support technicians' choice.
