What Should You Do With Your Old Computer(s)?
Another question frequently encountered by our Fort Lauderdale computer service: What can you do with an old computer that's no longer used?
More and more computers just sit in closets collecting dust as new and improved models take their place. What should you do about this?
First, says tech expert Heather Hamilton of the Savannah Morning News, start by cleaning it up. Even if all the data is off the old computer, start by reformatting the machine. It will up the performance, making that old computer maybe not so old after all!
Another way to rejuvenate an old computer is to add more RAM. If it's an older model, you can probably find RAM cheap, and it's easy to install.
If you have a problem doing so, just call a Fort Lauderdale computer repair expert for help - but it's ridiculously simple.
To find how much RAM you have now, click "My Computer" and "Properties." To figure out how much more to add, consult the manual or simply open up the computer and look for free slots.
The toughest part is finding the right type of RAM.
Go to the manufacturer's site and search for your particular computer model. Often, the manufacturer will sell RAM to you directly.
However, feel free to write down the type of RAM and go to a trusted Fort Lauderdale computer service or shop around for what you consider a good bargain.
Assuming your machine is now running at its best, here is what Broward computer repair experts suggest you do with it...
- Let kids use it on a limited-access basis that allows them to play games without installing anything themselves.
- Turn it into a multimedia or home theater. Most machines will hook up from the sound card to a receiver and play music. If you want to use your computer for a home theater, you'll probably need a Pentium III processor and a new video card. But that's very doable.
- Use the computer as a storage database. In other words, load up that old computer with a bunch of big hard drives so that after a little bit of networking, every machine in the house can connect and pull data off it. Connect printers and share those, too.
Or you can just take it and turn it in to your local Fort Lauderdale computer repair center and they'll dispose of it. But that's not nearly as cool as some of these alternative things you can do!
Think about it.
