Novell Acquires PlateSpin, and What That Means
Novell has announced an agreement to acquire PlateSpin, one of the major players in the management of virtualized resources segment of the growing virtualization software market, for approximately $205 million.
This is just the latest in a series of like moves by Novell.
SiteScape, a market leader in open source team collaboration, has been bought by Novell in a hope to enhance the latter's reputation as a leader in the field of innovative and open collaboration solutions.
While the SiteSacpe deal was widely expected, some wondered why Novell made the move to obtain PlateSpin since Novell already had a number of products in this space, like Novell Orchestrator.
With that in mind, we asked some Fort Lauderdale computer repair experts to weigh in on this latest open source merger.
The consensus seems to be that the two companies focused on different management technologies for virtual environments, and there exist more opportunities for a merged organization to pursue.
In short, the combined organizations have a terrific opportunity to help organizations transition from data centers that look like a computer museum to ones upon a unified hardware architecture and diverse software.
In addition, integrating two formally independent organizations into a single unified organization may be more important to the new company than integrating several different lines of development.
After all, as with all mergers in open source collaboration and beyond, new management styles and approaches to addressing market needs can either boost or hamper the proposed integration plans that look so great on paper.
We'll have to wait and see how successful this effort is.
