Ubuntu: Expanding or Selling Out?
The founder of Ubuntu Linux is ready to invest in desktop development of the platform - if he sees commitment by the community in taking on desktop market leaders.
The company's vision, if there is enough support for it, is to put Linux ahead of the Mac or Windows in terms of experience.
Ubuntu higher-ups have long desired to be more commercially viable, and note that many developers, such as Canonical, are not profitable.
That particular organization now provides Ubuntu free as a download and even provides free CDs with the Linux OS.
Ubuntu developers have been interested in Window-fying Ubuntu, to make it a more comfortable experience for end users accustomed to working in Microsoft Windows environments and, perhaps, hesitant to try Ubuntu.
According to various Ft. Lauderdale computer repair sources, they have included some features to address that in the newest Ubuntu release.
The idea, as execs envision it, is to instill a sense of confidence that Ubuntu will continue with a successful legacy in the situation that no one wants to face - that its market evaporates altogether.
Some observers have begun to ask if Ubuntu is even really an open source software company any more. In essence, it never was company, but rather a free Linux distribution - GPL'd and open source by definition.
