For Florida, Charlie Crist ends shady cancellation practices at AOL
Thanks goes out to our soon-to-be governor Charlie Crist for taking action against the shady business practices over at one of the nation's largest consumer-oriented ISP. Says Crist "Consumers should not have to keep looking over their shoulders to make sure mega-corporations aren’t trying to take advantage of them, this agreement is an important step toward protecting our citizens from consumer fraud." Agreed.
Of late, the 20th century giant of the online world, aptly name "America Online" has been seeing customers leave just as fast as they joined during the company's prime. Increased pressure from the more agile and technologically superior providers have left AOL without the technology to offer an attractive service, let alone at a compelling cost. In seeing its customers leaving in droves, AOL resorted to highly aggressive scripts at its call centers designed to frustrate and outright 'trick' cancellation callers into retaining their service.
The company is now undergoing major reorganization , and a strategic shift towards an advertiser-based community portal, instead of its traditional subscription-pay revenue streams . Its current subscription models will be migrated through its 'Netscape' marketing brand. Investors are leery as to the ultimate viability of this strategy, and it remains to be seen whether this new focus will pay off.
Meanwhile, all Florida AOL customers whom were unable to cancel their accounts, or whom felt that undue pressure lead them not to cancel an account is encouraged to file for a cancellation, along with the appropriate restitution requests via the official complaint form.
